Could I ask what the advantage to using a cad app as oposed to a genareal modeller?
In general, the home design apps generate 3D building objects from 2D floorplan drawings. So if you need a house model for a 3D scene that looks like an actual house (with furnishings and everything), these CAD programs are nice to have. Chief Architect X1 uses POVray I think for its render (slow as hell, but faster than Envisioneer's). I bought the billboard plant library for CA X1, but now that I have enough plants now for Vue (and added Xfrog to that list), I just do my plant/landscaping/rendering in Vue or modo.
See http://www.shonner.com/drafts/eichler_home.htm for something I played around with.
