Subject: OT; How does Windows 7 Pro 64 bit run games?

drifterlee ( ) posted Wed, 20 October 2010 at 11:10 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 8:22 AM

I am getting a new system, and I am wondering if my old Win Xp games will run on a 64 bit OS? Thanks

should run with no issues other than some old games - so far I've not had any luck with Mechcommander or Mechwarrior 3, and that's out of nearly a hundred games cough and even then it's not so much Win7 as modern graphics drivers...

but everything else has run fine. really Win7 has few issues with older software.

Thanks. I can always use my old PC for games that won't run on Win 7 64.

Hi drifterlee,

I'm running win 7 pro 64-bit and I havent run into any problems with apps or games running under the 64-bit OS.

I was able to get Quake 4 running. Thats the only PC game I own...I use my xBox for gaming.  ;)

I did have to get a new scanner and printer since my old ones didnt have drivers for win 7 64-bit.

Being an avid gamer, I have no problems running games in W7 64 bit that are up to 7 years old... some older games all of a sudden speed up insanely and become unplayable... like Warcraft 2 can not get that to work on my new PC, but unless you are planning on running some really ancient games you should be fine.

if you are after compatibility with really old games just keep your old computer in a closet or something, thats what i do, i currently use my win 7 64-bit comp & i have a win xp computer & old computer for dos / win95-98.....

I dont use the old comps much but its nice to know they are there :D

No need to keep the old computer around, donate it to somebody in need of one.

To play your games, if not working with Compatibility Mode (right clik on .EXE, then Properties, then Compatibility); modern computers may run virtual machines.

Use one of them, VMWare for example, and install WinXP (or Win98) in that virtual machine and play your games. If played in old PC, will play in new & virtualized.

Windows7 Ultimate 64-bit here, no problems with games, and i have installed at the moment: Dungeons and Dragons Online, The Lord of the Rings Online, Halo 1, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Counter Strike Source, Guitar Hero III, MAME Emulator (yea, i like to play Pac-Man too). I don't think you will have any problems running games, just remember to run them as administrator. (my computer is two years old by the way)
