Sounds to me like it's a driver issue. If you don't know exactly what sort of chip is inside your computer, you might wanna try Belarc Advisor. It's awesome for giving you system specs and detailed hardware info.

Also, look in your device manager to see if your sound card is working properly. And lastly, make sure it's something as simple as your main speakers aren't muted ;o)
