'Morning everyone. I woke at 4.30am and decided to check on this thread. My goodness! I'm so pleased it is blossoming like it is. It's now 8.22. Yawnnnnn.
Anyway, there are some questions I can answer.
FE availability: I have all the versions, starting, I think, with 123, and ending with 203b3. I have them all in one folder that also contains the zipped versions. I use 200.b3 and 203.b3. 200b3 is the most stable, but contains fewer built in formulae. The file is 30+ mb. I can either split it and send in several pieces, or upload it to one of those large file-sharing sites for people to download. Can somebody please point me to a good one? I don't want to split it down into a smaller file, because the one I use is the one I know works.
Developer stuff: Arthur actually was working on updating the code when he disappeared suddenly. No actual reason given, but...anyway. Perhaps voluntary. There is source code around. Andre Vandergoten has a copy. I have his email address.
There is no site where 203b3 is available. As far as I know, the Eclectasy site is still operational. It has all the ancillary files. The version there is older.
Compatibility. There are some issues. As Len said, the 32/64 bit is one of them. I have found also that there seems to be a few problems with running system qpps beside fE. This has arisen recently. Going offline and killing virus checker. etc do help, but XP and up are much bigger programmes that do tend to expand to fill any available space. RAM in particular. So if you want to render images larger than 6000x6000, there can be problems, even when running in 'skeleton' mode. Arthur always worried about RAM, as do I.
Bugs: LOL. We're talking FE here; its gold is more hidden than the big shiny fractal software. But usually there are workarounds, including the best workaround of all: patience.
FEusers list is still alive, but is taking no new members, and it has morphed into a group of people posting almost anything but FE. I find it sad to see the degeneration after the strong, robust list I joined in 1998.
Spot sharing: This is the best way to keep the blood circulatig. Like Jenny, I do it all the time. In fact, I think most of us do.
Saving palettes. The easiest way is: in the view pane on the left of the main window, open the folder containing the spot you want to copy th palette from; select and right click the spot. You can then choose to open the palette which will transfer to the image you are workjing on. To save a palette, just use the lower left palette options. This will enable you to save your most favourite palettes where you can access them readily. There is room for six, I think, and you can change them whenever you want. I have a couple of Arend's that I still often use as starting points.
Numbers using FE. I'll get back to you on this.
What a pleasure to read everyone's posts. Jenny you did start something lovely.
I have to go and nurse my pleurisy. Yeah. Still too painful. The good news it it should get better. The bad news is it is expected to be three MONTHS!!!
much love
