Well look at it this way:
According to Mormons we are all God's "spirit children". God has a wife and a physical existence. They have procreated and created all the human souls. Every time a child is born on Earth, a spirit inhabits its body - a spirit that pre-existed and was created by the procreation of "God" and his wife.
After the final Judgment the best of the best married male Mormons are reunited with their wive(s) and then can procreate, creating their own spirit children.
Okay, so where does that lead?
That leads to the inevitable conclusion that those people have in a very real sense become gods. And it strongly implies that "God" was once just a regular person.
It is not a misinterpretation. It may not be widely taught or be "official" doctrine that they explicitly say "you will become a god", but it IS the ultimate goal and belief.
