For better looking shadows, increase the shadow map sizes when you render. For better looking textures, use both a texture map and a reflectance map. And increase the texture map size (I'd recommend the program "Genuine fractals", although the image scaler in PootoPaint 9 isn't bad, either). But Poser's renderer is much like a video game. It's not a ray tracer (like Cararra or Bryce), and it can only go so far. Your best bet for a good render is to export the file to a better renderer. The interface is the opposite of what you describe, Poser becomes the "posing plugin" for lightwave or 3D Studio.
