Odd. Have not seen anything like that yet. Is it possible that you accidentally zoomed in too far and now only see the gray background? Hit the "frame all" button and see if anything appears.  Also try to switch between the different screen layouts (text, both, graph only) and see if that resets it.

The rules are still there because you can see them in the text window above thye gray space in your screen shot.
