Subject: Ilegal or Legal Book

corinthianscori ( ) posted Sat, 08 January 2011 at 11:33 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 12:37 AM

Am I insane or is this Google giving away a FREE online copy of a book that's for sale?

Is this illegal or is this some sorta Google-bought-this-book-and-put-it-online thing? Maybe some user scanned and posted all this?

Secrets of Poser Figure Creation

I already own this book:D Where is the updated version?! Could have sworn amazon said one was coming a YEAR AGO!!! blah!

corinthianscori ( ) posted Sat, 08 January 2011 at 11:36 PM

Okay, so about 15 pages are missing. But nearly $50 for a $10(used with CD) book?! Google is bonkers! No one's gonna pay that! Even to have it RIGHT NOW via ebook'ing. Cheaper to overnight ship the real thing!

Its a sample of the Book. A few merchants are doing it, you can look at only some pages of the book. They say on the left that its available for 43$ as an ebook.

When it comes to marketing, Google is rarely bonkers.  Whatever trick they're pulling, you can be sure it's profitable for them... though probably not for the author.

Sounds interesting. Is there any more books about the subject?

actually they got sued over this and won. The judge for some reason didn't think it was a violation of the copyright holders rights. said it was no different than a library making it available. I disagree, but then who am I? LOL

If you look you'll notice it's only showing a few pages of any chapter.

They used to have the entire book online on google.

"How'd You Do That" by DAD is a very good book on figure creation as well.

Attached Link: 'Secrets of Poser Experts'

by Daryl Wise, Jesse Derooy.

I found this, and have ordered it..it looks like it's going to be an interesting Poser-spring..

Remember-- Google automates everything; eBook pricing is going to be whatever the publisher and the Google algorithm agree to . . . there's no human in the loop to review a price "hey this doesn't make sense"

Long way of saying that some prices will be attractive, others less so.

In general, I find technical handbooks are vastly more useful as eBooks than on paper

Yeah, I bet Google DID get sued over this kinda stuff. It IS a kick in the author's teeth to have over 50% of their book available for free by a non-publisher. C'est la vie!

Nothing to be sued over, as it notes that it is with the premission of the Publisher*:"Pages displayed by permission of Elsevier." *

If they can generate even a few additional sales for a seven-year old technical book (it is for Poser 5, after all) thay are doing well...

I was refering to when google was trying to digitize all those books and make them available for free on the internet. Now seems they are trying to be amazon.com.

Kyhighlander are you sure you're not thinking of Gutenberg Project rather than Google?

I have the flu so I may be, but seems it was google making books available online for free and was sued. Was about 8 years ago. I have accessed some books thru google like that, but don't have the url so I may be mistaken.

thinks get a bit fuzzy when your sick.

Ahh I see what it was - not wanting to pay $5 for the privilege of reading that article, that was enough of a clue to find it:
