Free or purchase?  Poser does not lend itself too well for 3D object creation although it is possible.  If freeware is more to your taste, Wings3D and Blender comes to mind.  They are powerful object creation programs which will give you plenty of mileage.  Blender has a steep learning curve because they have many contributors in it's development, but it is a powerhouse at the right price.
