As far as I know,a multi-pass render is the only way to make a planet appear as though it is behind the clouds.You could use a few spheres rendered in a volumetric cloud material(with sky integration added in the material drop-down)...this would at least give a similar impression,and the spheres can be stretched and skewed to help fill up the sky more.
