I had very similar symptoms to this not long ago, my pc would show the bios screen and the drive would run but a black screen was all I would get, and using the restart with last known good configuration would work sometimes but not all times.

After some researching on the net I replaced my RAM sticks (even though MEMTest showed no problems with my RAM) and the problem disappeared. That may not be the problem with your setup, but it may be worth trying some different RAM sticks if you could.
