Well, I tired putting in some different ram had a good restart. Put my ram back in (the other was borrowed from my son's computer) and it still works. I also changed that little battery that powers the clock when the computer is unplugged. The computer has worked fine ever since. Mcafee stopped acting up once the update was done, even before I messed with the ram, so perhaps the 2 weren't related. But things seem fine now. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
