It looks like you have a number of backwards-facing polygons.  If you set "Normals Forward" in the Materials Room, that might help it render better.  Are you importing with "Make polygon normals consistent" checked?  Possibly that might improve something.  😕

I know UV Mapper Pro has some tools to help correct backwards polygons.  I seem to recall that Wings 3D might correct backwards polys on import.  If that's the case, importing and exporting with Wings might fix it.
