Is anyone else having trouble with emitters?  I keep getting this error.  After I hit Export to Lux, I get processing actor...square_1 & it just hangs there. Tried a scene that exported ok last month  & it gives the same error now.

I cannot replicate this problem, either in 32bit or 64bit Windows.

Can you create a very simple scene comprised only of primitives and see if the problem still manifests when one of them is made into an emitter? If so, perhaps you could zip up the scene and send it to me.

This is a strange bug because not only am I unable to repicate it, but the error message doesn't make sense when compared with the source code!

Is anyone else having problems with exporting emitters?

The only problem with emitters I am having is one of learning how to make groups, and assigning them accordingly.  I haven't been successful with that yet.  I can make and assign lightgroups, but not emitters.

Flenser ( ) posted Tue, 22 March 2011 at 2:24 PM

You can do that on the emitter screen, use the assign button at the bottom.

I just make groups for the emitters in the lights panel and then assign them in the emitters panel :). Hey, it works...lol.

file_467069.txt

i made a simple scene with poser primitives--one box, one square, ground plane, one inf light, one ibl.  made the ground an emitter, tried to export, no joy.  did the same with the box & the plane, same error.  hangs on the emitter prop on export & produces an incomplete .lxs. same results on both my machines (xp/32 & w7/64)

with P2L1.0 the export goes perfectly.   since 1.0 works for me i'm just going to use that instead of pro, at least when i want emitters.

i was hoping it was user error/just me but since i get the same results on both my machines i don't know.

Not sure if this is the right place to do this but (let me know if it isn't):

Just a quick update on the website: the manual is sort-of roughed in... still needs polishing and images. And possibly updating by the actual author, which is (as I understand) LaurieA. Let me know if you are able to access editing or if I need to give you additional privileges... still getting the ol' grey matter around Drupal, so I might have missed something. Oh, and anyone I might need to assign more privileges to, please let me know.

Also, I'm converting the FAQ to book format, so that we can section topics and subtopics, making searches a bit easier and updating the FAQ a bit more orderly.

Oh, and I still am putting the links page together and all that other stuff we talked about.

I was going to let the "...Challenged" thread sort-of die a natural death and continue on here, if that's okay.

Thanks to all who have signed up and let me know what you think ... any suggestions I'll add to my to-do list.

😄

Maybe we could get the materials download section up so those of us who are working on them will have a place to put them?  Get them all gathered up and in one centralized location?  Or are we stilling waiting for the materials tutorial first?  So it can all be done at once?

It is looking better and better anyway round it Robyn, I am sure more people will get signed up as things get onto the site too.  I do like that I don't get eyestrain reading it, even with my lousy vision, sometimes the bright text on dark backs here can be problematic.  And the plain font is easier for me to resize as needed.

I may have to do a render that is actually suitable to add to the gallery rather than the half naked pin ups I have been playing with since my victorian night street scene is giving me nothing but headaches.

Cariad ( ) posted Wed, 23 March 2011 at 11:08 PM

Looks lovely Laurie, I always liked the ballroom.

As for the half naked pinups, well, blatant excuse to over use latex materials.  It is going to a friend as a belated bday present. :p

The issue I am having with my street scene I am sure is happening on the Poser side of the equation.  Using Stonemason's victorian street, made the snow invisible but am getting some weird arsed artifacts on the pavement now.  Checked for Normals Forward yup they are, I redid the materials to be sure they were P4 style all the way through (basically were, just had to kill the ambient and adjust the diffuse and specular).  Hid the Poser ground to be sure it wasn't that peeking through in spots since the pavement isn't perfectly flat, nothing seems to get rid of them.  No AO, but Lux wouldn't read that anyways.  So, I am well and truly stumped.  I may have to find different ground to use.

Working on them now as we speak, Rhionon. Links are a bit of a different animal in Drupal: the thingie you end up with will auto-detect if a link to a site or file or whatever is no longer valid, so people won't get those annoying "File is not on this server" message that looks so unprofessional. But it does mean another thingie I have to learn: links.

Thank you. I'm thinking of leaving the theme alone for the time being, but maybe having an inverse colour set (light on dark) for the gallery and stuff where there isn't a lot of reading: more picture-admiration.

I'm sorry this is all taking a while but I am trying to get things functional as quickly as I can, and the links are my next goal... hopefully by the weekend, we'll have something reasonbly attractive we can use.

In terms of giving you a means of sending files to me: I do want to set up some sort of file upload area for everyone. On my list of things to do.

Robyn, if there is anything I can do to help hun just ask, goodness knows I have time to kill most days. :)

I am actually pondering an idea, since it has come up with a few people I have spoken to about P2L.  What about a few 'Before and After' type pictures, so people can honestly judge the difference for themselves.  Render the same scene twice, once in Poser and once in Lux, of course listing any changes that had to be made

IDL is as close as we will get from Poser, but I am working on one as an example for a friend anyways, they are curious to see why I am nuts about this.  BB's Envirosphere and one infinite light are all I am using in Poser for it, going to take it over as is (save for the necessary material room changes).

Which reminds me, does anyone have a soft leather material for Lux since the one I am using in Poser is procedural and won't come across obviously.  Something suitable to clothing?

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 12:40 PM

something I've been dicussing with Laurie is, a form of primer for using this.

basically how to move away from the "poser render" into what Luxrender can do for us...

Airport security is a burden we must all shoulder. Do your part, and please grope yourself in advance.

Cariad ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 12:51 PM

I think it is a great plan.  I think part of what might hold some people back is they aren't seeing the end result quite often here, or an honest comparison of the two, where they can see the changes laid out side by side.

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 1:59 PM

The thing is though, you can just look at most LuxRender renders and see that there IS no comparison...lol. ;)

Laurie

Malysse ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 7:23 PM

Some good points being raised here guys - I expect there are a lot of people out there who would want to take advantage of Lux's rendering power if they realised how easy it was now.

But at the same time, let's not forget that although Lux is pretty damn good, it's only good at one kind of rendering - photorealism, or something approaching it.

Art, of course, is more diverse than that and for many kinds of  image Firefly will be absolutely fine, perhaps even better. I know I'll still be using Firefly sometimes despite my current love affair with Lux.

By all means spread the word about Luxrender and Pose2Lux, but maybe not get too evangelical about it as it won't be the right choice for everyone!

Just my 2d worth :-)

Cariad ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 8:12 PM

I tend to do fairly stylized images, but I see Lux as a tool along with Pose2Lux, am I going to abandon the style I generally work in in favour of photo realism?  No.  But can I see it has having a place in my work flow, yes.  Will it reduce the time I spend doing postwork?  Can't say that.  I like my postwork.  Can it allow me the possibility of lighting options that I simply can't accurately produce in Poser?  Oh heck yes.

That is why I am for it, not as a means to make photorealistic images, undoubtedly, by the time I finish with anything it won't be anyways.  Simply put for me it is a way to add another dimension to what I am already doing.

People will love it or hate it as they choose, but making it a known quantity where otherwise it might not be seen, that is what I would like to have happen.  This isn't about preaching but like raytraced shadows or IDL or anyone of a hundred other things, it is an option that is available.

Like Daz users who have opted to use Reality, Pose2Lux is a choice.  Lux is a choice, I would just like to be able to show people just what it can do especially since the website is in development.  A lot of this thread is works in progress and testing images, some final finished comparison type pieces was all I was suggesting.

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 24 March 2011 at 9:06 PM

I couldn't have put it better myself. Whilst a few brave souls have exported poser scenes to other programmes, the process - I'm assuming - would have been quite involved. Plugins / scripts have taken the pain out of this to some extent. I hope that this is a bit the sign of things to come and that more of this sort of thing becomes the norm for other renderers. Oh, no one is twisting my arm, Rhionon... it's my OCD which isn't letting me go. Sorry, didn't mean to imply anyone was placing undo expectations on me or anything like that.

Nurses are known for sort-of sneak-thinking about exit strategies. Most of us never leave nursing - except the blokes, who most of them can't hack it, so they go into admin! - but we do sometimes think (after being chewed out by some ham-fisted surgeon for something he stuffed up) there must be a better way to make a living. And I can't help but think web-design/development with Drupal/php might not be a bad thing to be getting comfortable with once I retire (7 years away), so I see this as a great opportunity!

I will try to finish letting some stuff bake this weekend, today is the kids dad's bday, so things are a little muddled.

Have to bake a cake and decorate it still and make sure the hundred and one other things get done today.  Bleh.  Rather be playing.
