Subject: Anyone up for some benchmarking?

onnetz ( ) posted Mon, 21 March 2011 at 2:40 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 1:33 AM

I haven't seen this done in a while and would like to compare my rig to some of the others out there.

I'm using Pro 2010 and would like it to be open to any version of poser.

Maybe a scene file using IDL and one without so older versions of Poser can participate. I'm also trying to think of a way to test Posers use of memory as well. Not just the cpu. I know from what I remember other benchmarks have just measured time. What I would like to do is also get hardware stats like  temps.

If enough people seem interested we can work out the details of a scene and settings. If not then I will set up a scene along with settings myself and post my results. Making it available to others.

Not everyone knows exactly what they have as far as their system goes so here is a link to a program that tells all. No installation needed. Just unzip it.

cpu-z 1.57

Here's a program to read all your temps along with fan speeds and a couple other things from your hardware.

Nothing to be embarassed about, its all about the comparisons. So the wider range of systems the better.

Got a scene setup and am working on different settings right now. These settings were a bit high and took about 17mins to render at this resolution. Gonna drop the settings a bit, hoping to keep high under 10mins on my system. I will have settings for low, med, and high.

Idl and raytracing in this scene. The only light is a hdri mapped to a plane in the ceiling.

Just uploaded a scene using only AO and Raytracing. I should add that I saved all these scenes running Pro 2010. I'm not sure how backwards compatibilty is with opening them in older versions of Poser.

I should also add that I'm running win 7 32 bit with 4x1 gigs of memory.

My time for this one:

Great. I'm looking forward to your results.

To everyone: Running this test isn't just for bragging rights on who has the fastest computer. Think of it as a form of maintenance or preventive maintenance if you will.. Running the test gives you a snapshot of your systems performance relative to poser. This is why I recommended running the hardware monitors as well. Maybe your system is running hotter than it should. Or you see similiar systems to yours running the benchmark much faster. Or maybe you run the test a month or two from now and your numbers dont match up to previous runs. It gives you a heads up that somthing might not be right with your system.

Getting a bit anal about things but somthing I do before running any benchmark is to check the taskmanager for what processes are running looking for anything out of the ordinary or things that really dont need to be running.

Before running the tests today on win 7 I had 47 processes running.

Just the numbers. I only have a few minutes before I have to go out.

System: E5200 Dual core Pentium LGA775 @ 2.5 800FSB

Memory: 1 piece 2GB DDR2 800

Free ram before running Poser: I'll get back to you on this with the exact number but 256 meg goes to the onboard graphics and the is always AVG running in the background.

All tests done seperately on a clean boot with the above overhead.

Medium: 6min 35.724 sec

I wonder how much of an impact wine has on performance. I would think the 920 would be a bit closer to the 860 .

While I have no bench numbers on me, I used to run p8 under wine (ubuntu 9.10) and performance to be poor.  It seemed to exhibit poor cpu usage while running renders (watching system monitor).

I am going to attempt to get my w7 x64 numbers up when I get home.

Actually I watched the CPU performance while rendering. Utilisation of all 8 CPU threads was full at all times.

I have found P8 to run very good and fast on my system (in fact so did Poser 7 earlier) and have done so for years.

It is not wise to make performance judgements comparing rendering times between Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010 - their rendering times are surely not the same no matter what the underlying operating system.

Totally agree.  When I ran the same render in both for FYI purposes, the 2010 x64 cut off like 56 seconds on a complex scene vs p8.  When animating, that added up real quick.

Yes, hyperthreading with 8 threads. I should have mentioned that the i7 860 was slightly overclocked to 3.1 GHz

Over the next few weeks I'll be building a new box with the second generation i7 2600k 3.4GHz, so I'll publish the results when I get them, together with improvements from overclocking.

I think using a SATA6 SSD for the runtimes and temp files should result in slightly fast renders too.

"I think using a SATA6 SSD for the runtimes and temp files should result in slightly fast renders too."

I used to run P8 from a SSD a couple of years back, but didn't get the overall boost I had hoped for so I switched the SSD to better use (systems disk) and Poser Runtime is in a 10000rpm traditional disk. The most obvious gain in my experience was when reading big save files (with "big" I mean files in the size range of over 300 megs) and the pre-rendering texture-reading phase. There might've been slight increases in other areas, but I never bothered to time anything precisely. I have SSDs on 4 computers as systems disks and will never ever go back to traditional disks in that area again.

A little OT, but last year I put together a machine for my daughter from spare parts and one cheap-o Kingston 128GB SSD and wow ... that baby boots up to full operating system (Ubuntu Linux) with full graphics environment and networking set in only 8 seconds! Same thing with my mini-laptop (Asus EEE) from which I switched the disk to a high-performance SSD.

Windows 7 x64

Poser Pro 2010

Low: 51s @49c

High: 5m21s @52c

I'll admit I was apprehensive about doing this with a budget processor, but considering the CPU only cost me $95 (a year ago, at a retail store even), I think I couldn't be happier with the results.

I can't for the life of me remember what speed it is, 10666 or 13333.  Regardless, I have it running at 1460 MHz since I had to crank the CPU frequency up so high (locked multiplier). Since the RAM freq is lower than stock I decreased my latency timings to compensate.  I'm using the OCZ memory and it is junk, won't go over 1600 MHz for anything and I think it is not very stable.

I am VERY surprised I was able to beat your times, since we are clock-for-clock.  The Q6600 was a better CPU than mine IMO, it was the competitor to the Phenom IIs.  What do your RAM settings look like?  Even at DDR2 I would think that wouldn't make a big enough difference since the scene was small.  Also, I don't know what your bus frequencies are, but it may help to raise those, then lower your CPU multiplier to compensate if 3.6 is your upper limit. Sorry I can't better explain what I'm talking about, I don't have as much experience overclocking Intels as I do AMD.

onnetz ( ) posted Wed, 06 April 2011 at 2:36 PM

You can use the cpu-z program I posted a link to and find out what your memory is running at. It works for intel and amd.

I'm running a 1:1 ratio on the bus and memory.  400 on the bus and 800 on the memory. Timings are pretty loose at 5:5:5:15. I was running it at 1066 with the same timings but got intermittent crashes about once a month. Tried 5:5:5:18 and still wasnt stable.  My multiplier is set at 9. The memory is rated at 4:4:4:12 800mhz.

I'm using the p5q pro turbo motherboard and for quads it doesnt like to go over 460 on the bus.

Tomorrow I will get the q6600 up to 4ghz and tighten the timings for the memory, then run the benchmark. I've had it up to 4.1ghz but vcore was getting kindof high along with temps. I'm using the cm v6gt for cooling but it still likes to run hot

Remember the Q6600 is the older 65nm technology instead of the 45nm for newer 775 socket cpus.
