Hubert, the photos were taken a couple of days ago now. Fake timestamp indeed!

As for the solution, I noticed that when I plugged the camera in and swtiched it on, the pc bing-bonged to let me know it had made the connection. So, looking at the Device Manager list, I could see an icon for an imaging device/digital camera appear. It's properties confirmed that it was for a Canon digital camera.

So I deleted the icon. The camera icon disappeared and my camera switched itself off. I switched it on again and the PC instantly recognised the camera and fired up the cannon software!!! So, atm it all works very well.

Thanks for your list of possible solutions though.
