There a different ways to influence the intensity of the sun. Go to the Atmosphere Editor and go to the light tab. Under Global Lightning Adjustment for Dark and Bright.

The thing i always do is to make the shadows a bit more soft. Go to the sunlight object  and right click. Then make sure shadows is enabled.  Put the shadows slider a bit more to the left. This wil make the shadows a bit softer.
