Thanks markschum. I was suspecting the very small scale of the ball in the base prop might have caused the problem.

Now this is really strange. If I spawn props from the base obj in the Grouping tool, the sphere does not come out as a sphere. It seems to loose a lot of its facets, see image above, in Smooth Lined Style.
