I like the photoshop method. If you are pretty good at grayscales you can get some awesome text effects! I have never used elefont, so I can't say anything good or bad about it. Photoshop gives me a good amount of control over the grayscale. Plus, if you're good with alpha channels, you can "preview" it in photoshop before you actually get over to your rendering program!
