Quote - so did my wife the other day ( running Firefox, AVG, Comodo Firewall, etc)

she clicked an Image link - nothing more - and was hit by a malware injection attack, that locked her machine up with a fake Antivirus. took me 3 hours to clean out.

so don't think "I have full protection" - thats a fool talking.

Since she knows what it looks like when it happens (it's usually the same - click an image and voila - the common adware warning reports telling you it's found something bad, etc.) have her do the 3 finger salute - ctrl/alt/del  - Windows Task Manager will pop up and under applications quickly highlight whatever browser is running and click End Task. Then do a scan if you like but I've found it usually prevents adware from installing itself in your temporary internet folders if your fast enough. Show her, too, what the installed scanner looks like so she'll see the foreign adware scanner is not the same.

I see these especially with celebrity image searches. So that's when to be the most on alert.

Also, she should be only surfing the web as a user with limited privileges. It cuts down on the risk of something getting into her/your system and roosting and it's also easier to clean out the varmints from the admin login. When you finally reopen the browser go to your homepage and do not restore the session that suddenly ended - nuf said.
