I use Rsync, it's free. It is similar to Mac time machine, I heard. You can restore to any given point in time.
Only requirement: Your backup medium must be capable of running a better file system than FAT (for example NTFS, because file system links are required). I have a Verbatim external USB disk, which could be reformatted to NTFS. For some vendor's disks, that's not possible.
Additional benefit: It's much faster than a full backup.
