My wife gew up in Oregon, and she heard Mt. St. Helens explode back in 1980-she was camping about 200 miles south and they thought it was thunder. 

I'm glad this wasn't an explosive eruption-frequent eruptions are far safer in the long run.  It's a shame about the animals, though.
