Ice-boy, yes, you can remove specular from hair images, though they seem to look a bit faded after you have done it. For me, the biggest shortcoming of hair photographs was aligning and scaling it with the flow of hair vertices. Someone with better UV-mapping skills than me might not think that is a problem.

The main hair colour sites do have colour swatches, and you can use those to pick up colours to draw hair textures with.
