Subject: Nvidia Quadro 3700FX or ATI 5750 for PoserPro 2010

Smitthms ( ) posted Sat, 11 June 2011 at 1:36 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 4:36 AM

I'm running the ATI 5750 currently, but, I've quit gaming & mainly doing art when I'm not working & sleeping.

System Specs are ----> 2.9 ghtz AMD Quad-Core with 6 gigs of Ram on Win 7.

I've always been told ATI runs better on AMD & Nvidia runs better on Intel, but, for graphics, does that matter? I do know the Quadro was a beast in My Intel 2.7 ghtz dual-core.... before I smoked it.

Thanks for any input in advance,

~Thomas

Hi Thomas

Unless Poser uses any of the 'pro' features in a quadro I don't think its worth it.

That reduces the quadro 3700 to its gaming equivalent the 8800GT. Which is several generations old, only directx 10, and less than half the performance of your ATI 5750.

(and six times the price  )

You might find incompatiblities with specific combinations of graphic drivers and software.

...but generally the AMD/Nvidia divide no longer exists, except with multi-card hardware and GPU computing. Neither of which Poser uses.

if you have a good graphics card you should use Luxpose and Luxrender.

you can render poser scenes and figures faster and more realistic.

Lol by using a quadro use maya or 3ds.

Faster? No one at Lux seems to state that. Any proof to make your claim believable?

When "Galadriel" had two ATI 4870x2 cards in CrossFire and the Catalyst utility, Poser Pro would sometimes quit -just disappear- when I would import a new OBJ.  Someone wiser than I narrowed the problem down to Poser Pro calling for an OpenGL  protocol which the ATI cards/driver didn't have.  I replaced the ATIs with a Quadro, and never saw the problem again.  I'll quickly admit that there may have been some way to calibrate the ATIs to get them to preview my geometries without dying, but I never found it.  By the way, the ATIs gave gorgeous video display, and I never encountered a display frame rate limit with them.

You won't render any faster within Poser using a Quadro, but remember that the preview display which you see while setting up a scene makes much use of OpenGL.  If you also have Vue, a good video card with lots of on-board memory will make a remarkable improvement in preview quality and detail.

Quadro is overkill for Poser, but if you also use other studios, they may be worthwhile.  For the benefit of the newer forum folks:  the Quadro is nVidia's professional workstation video card series, as opposed to their gaming and general purpose GeForce series.  While the GeForce will be faster, the Quadro is more accurate and has greater capacity.

By the way, this laptop "Pixie" which I'm on at the moment has a Quadro 3600M, and Poser Pro 2010, Vue 9.5 Infinite, et al, are running quite happily.

Honestly, that's not true... I've used Luxrender with Pose2Lux and the rendering time is 10X slower than firefly render. And my machine is win7 Ultimate 64 bit with NVIDA GT 430 not the most advanced but more advanced than my previous graphic card.  I'll go with realistic (as realistic as most renders goes) but faster, nuh huh! 😉

Attached Link: Octane Render

If you have Nvidia cards, you should check out Octane Render. It's fully GPU rendering, with multi-gpu support. Most of my renders are done in 5 - 10 minutes.

It has a demo to try it out if you're curious. The materials are standard texture maps, or node based, so Poser users should be somewhat comfortable.

Is octane something that is stand alone, or used with Luxrender, or can it be used in Poser?

Octane is stand alone... Just import OBJ and set up materials.

Don't think you would gain anything when it comes to poser, since Poser doesn't really make use of all the power any graphics card has. If you're running things like Vue and Cinema4D or Max and so on it would be a different story. Even then you have to ask yourself if it's worth the money going back a few generations, loosing a lot and gaining some?

Luxrender is certainly not faster than Poser.

Schecterman ( ) posted Sun, 12 June 2011 at 7:22 PM

Until recently I'd have said that using a Quadro would be a waste of time and money for Poser.

Well, if you use a GTX series 200 --> GTX 250, GTX 260, GTX 275, 285 and so on, using a Quadro for Poser would be a waste of money since the GTX 200 series performs just as well with OpenGL as a Quadro as far as Poser goes.

However, nVidia recently realized that they made the OpenGL in the GTX 200 series so good that Quadro sales began to suffer as a result of studios equipping their machines with GTX 285's for $400 each instead of Quadros for $4,000.00.

And now, beginning with the Fermi line (GTX 400 and 500 series), they have been intentionally throttling back the OpenGL performance, to the point where a GTX 285 performs significantly faster than a GTX 580 in OpenGL.

So stock up on those GTX 285's while you still can... You don't need DX 11 for OpenGL apps anyway.

I don't know how much of a difference this makes for Poser right now, but it will in the future, assuming SM adopts the newer OpenGL shader models. It seems to make a significant difference with programs such as Maya and Softimage. 3ds max users are safe (for now) since 3ds max uses DX by default.

Never thought you might have to buy a video card that costs 3 times or more the cost of the program you want to use it for, did you? ;-)

I have used the Quadro 37xx in my BOXX system for a year. Works flalesslyin Poser Pro 2010 and Vue 9 and 9.5 as well as mudbox and maya 2010. I spent the money on speed and stability. my old system with twin 8800gt's ran so hot it was very unreliable on a 5 day animation job or just because it would overheat and crash. I am partial to Nvidia but I really do like this card.

Jeff_Kraschinski ( ) posted Fri, 17 June 2011 at 9:47 AM

I'd upgrade to an AMD/ATI 6870 myself, great performance and much lower power consumption than what you have now...

Michael_REMY ( ) posted Mon, 20 June 2011 at 6:11 AM

for your information, i own an old nvidia quadro fx1700.

And i can easily produce that 1080p animation in realtime (preview render) without any time to render (except the video codec operation).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5_HvmBklRI

i don't know what would be the result with a 1000$ video card, but i guess it would be near and not very much better than mine (<150$). Before my quadro, i had a oldest ati (HD2400) and i could not affor me this realtime render with it. So i guess the first price in nvidia quadro is enough (for me at least!) but i 'm curious like you of what will be the same render with better quadro...

i think i would need a bigger vcar like you told only in the case i needed more memory to store the texture in vram (with many characters, properties, landscape in my scene..).

As you can see, my animation use only one character with 4K textures.

By the way, i really would like someone build a sample scene (for poser 7 8 and pro 2010), upload it somewhere and build a topic for compare opengl render with different card.
