Because the infrastructure is there for high speed connections and the market will stand the relatively high price for low speed connections. Since there's relatively little demand for it now, the old rule of "low volume, high price" comes into effect, even if there's no material cost involved.
Basically, companies charge what the hell they want. Does anyone really believe a Custom Shop Gibson Les Paul is worth the money? It may be worth it if you want it and can afford it but really, nothing is intrinsically worth the purchase price. With the possible exception of Poser content, which is, IMO, drastically underpriced. But that's another thread.
