I think my avatar of the moment is 130x130, so I'm guessing that is the pixel limit.          

I'm going to have to guess that the kb limit is probably 15, since that is the limit for thumbnails in the galleries. But I agree it would be nice if it were stated on the account page where you add your avatar.
