The polygons in the back now face the camera and can be lit and seen. Many of the polygons in the front have disappeared. There are still some visible but they were actually facing the skin, not the camera, before I flipped them. (In other words, the hem, button area and collar have double-sided polygons.)
I suspect this is similar to what the OP saw.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
