Along the lines Keith discusses, you can work with soft reflections and soft refractions now, which are faster than they used to be at same settings and the quality higher than it used to be at same settings.
If you decrease the quality to match what used to be produced, it is so much faster you might think you have 64 cores.
There are an extraordinary number of real life materials where some blurred reflection makes a huge difference in realism. I'm revisiting a ton of materials.
A classic is leather.
