The problem of gamma correction is that should be applied when needed only to the dark parts of the image and not to all the image.

Even with cathode ray tubes, the old CRT monitor, the relationship between grid voltage and beam current is very non-linear near the cuttoff voltage (black level), but becomes more or less linear in the white levels.

Stupidity also evolves!
