It is according to the "MARKETPLACE QUALITY STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES", as per the attached link (but they don't always enforce it according to kawecki).

My guess would be that if the morphs broke when you externalised the geometry, you made an error.
The way to check is to compare the number of vertices in the OBJ with the delta count in the PP2.
