Hey Sam, I dod not own the figure, but in Poser 9 and PP2012 the "Smoothing option" is doing one hell of a good job for Lower Poly figures.
In the above example, the quality comes from:
Exellent Poly distrubution all over the figure. Every Poly is "doing something" in 3D Space. And its position is even more important because it will get subdevided.
Subdevision, sure; As the figure was modeled for Max, with subdevision in mind.
But also and perhaps even more important; From exelent texture work, combined with SSS.
