I didn't think we'd be that lucky. In one of your posts you mention a box at the end. What about a box like you use in the skinner script. Can you do something so all hairs that are in the box are selected? Or better would be only if ends are in the box but that's probably asking for too much. If you haven't guessed I know squat about python so I have no idea of it's limitations. Please forgive my wild ideas.
