Hmm.  Good question.  I can leave the listbox active, but that still uses hair index numbers.  I could allow multiple selection boxes, perhaps.  Then in a tricky area you could use smaller selection boxes, even down to one hair per box, but still select mutliple hairs.  Or there could be de-selection boxes as well, which de-select hairs in a selection listbox.

But things could get confusing quickly, too.  To be useful, selection boxes need to be wireframe.  Which can make them hard to tell apart, if there's more than one.
