Subject: Can't find thread on specs for a high end computer

Paula Sanders ( ) posted Thu, 15 December 2011 at 9:44 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 6:48 AM

I know I have read specs and didn't want to repeat this but couldn't find the thread either here or in the Vue Forum.  I want to have built for me a very high end computer. While I price it out, money won't be an object until I get closer so I want to start with the top and work down.

I have to find a new place since we moved so i can't rely on my excellent technician where we used to live and have to make more technical decisions on my own.

Any comments or references to past threads would be great.

I have now win 7 64-bit and 12 gigs of ram. My invida card is about 3 years old so I want a really good one for Vue.

Thanks a lot.

I can't find a good build thread that's newer, just old ones from over 2 years ago.

If money is no object you might check into this starting with this MOBO CPU COMBO

ASUS Rampage IV Extreme X79 LGA 2011 Motherboard and Intel Core i7-3960X 3.30GHz Extreme Edition. These have 8 memory slots and pci 3.0 usb 3.0 64GB maxThat would have been my choice, but money was an object so I went with a

ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 and an I7 2600k CPU and 16GB of mem now with 32GB max possible. It also has Pci 3.0 and Usb 3.0 Sata III I'm building that this weekend if my new Power supply gets here tomorrow.Reusing my old GTX 260 896MB graphics card for now. Seems fine to me on Vue 9 and 10 complete.

I know it's been a couple of weeks since you posted this Paula, but in case you didn't know AMD has 8, 12, and 16 Core CPUs now. Some folks like Boxxtech

http://www.boxxtech.com/products/3DBOXX/7600_Overview.asp

and Titanus Computers

http://www.titanuscomputers.com/

are putting them into Workstations with 16, 24, 32 or 64 Cores.

Thanks Thelby. I have my goal as July 2012 since I know there is new technology on the horizon. But I have not kept up and need to do it. I couldn't remember Boxx technologies. I used to be on their mailing list.

Happy New Year.
