Ok, have a look in Device Manager and see if it sees your Nvidia card in there. If it does then go into it's properties and make sure it's enabled. Then disable the onboard one, see if that works.

If device manager isn't seeing your Nvidia card then I'm not sure why..It should be seeing it...
