Hatsune Miku is one of the humanoid characters which were used to popularised the synthesized singing voice programs called Vocaloid. (see http://www.vocaloid.com/ for reference - sorry, Japanese webpage).
It was difficult for mass market end-users to associate a voice without a character, so a few humanoids were created to make the voice product more appealing - and it was a raging success among Otakus and other fans of anime and digital virtual persons.
