Regardless of what program you prefer, getting a good quality render is a lot about setting up lighting. Setting up lighting could take as long as setting up the scene.
After a movie has finished check out the credits. Boring? Hell Yes! But there are a LOT of people's names listed in the lighting department, and sometimes many different types of lighting are mentioned.

If you plan to do a lot of postwork (in photoshop, gimp, whatever) on the rendered image then consider that lighting may not be so important.
Tip: When setting up the main scene lights. Do test renders with shadows turned off. Shadows take a long time to render.
