I don't think you can call Poser. As far as I can tell from the Nervecenter site, Silo is only set up to generate a file in either POVRay format or .rib format for using a Renderman compliant renderer. With Poser, you're probably going to have to go with the export option. If you just want a rough look at how the mesh itself looks rendered maybe something like Kawecki's PropViewer here in freestuff might be an fast alternative to loading up Poser. As Bantha says though, nothing else is really a substitute for using whatever you plan to finally use for presentation. - which I assume is Poser. If you have enough memory, I suppose you could leave Poser open if for some reason you have a need to do multiple renders as you work but you'll probably have to delete & reimport the .obj each time.
