Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Quote - How soon do you want it? I can do it for ya if you don't already have an offer :)
I really don't want to put anyone to any trouble over such a small request. There must be something off the shelf that would do. And thank you very much icandy265 for your kind offer.
The problem seems that hair makers try to avoid the wig look, but that's just what I'm after LOL.
It's no problem at all, I recently did a shoulder length hair that only took about 4 hours to model and 1 hour to texture it :)
It sounds like fun to me, I love making hair models... Do you mind if I make it anyways? And if you don't like the look of it or find a better one than I'll just post it in the freebies section :)

Â
By all means. I owe you one.
Ash
I didn't either at first, I started out making morphs for V4/M4/K4, then moved on to learning how to make textures and shaders, then I started making clothes (which is how I learned how to model and make things from scratch, lol)... after that I started practicing with polygon hair and trust me the first few hairstyles I made were crap, lol, but the more I practiced the better I got and now I can make a very good style in less than a week, lol...
As for the hair room, I can do dynamic hair, infact I was making one last month, but the dynamic hair isn't nearly as easy as polygon hair, so I usually just do polygon hair instead, lol...
Oh wow, I didn't know that I typed like a man???? lol
Well I finished the hair, (not the morphs yet, but it's a conforming figure so it moves with her (K4 or V4) when she bends her head forward or side to side...
The only issue I'm having is getting it to look like a wig (the materials)... right now it looks silky and pretty like real hair, (I will include the "natural" mat files too, lol) but I want it to look a bit rougher like in the image above, lol...
It's currently rendering so I'll post a picture later on :)
Okay... earlier I tried to post this but the image was too big so I tried to use my image compression software to make it both smaller in files size and canvas size, but for some reason my computer crashed, and then I had to go somewhere, so I just shut down the pc while I was gone, lol... but I finally got it working and made the image smaller, lol...
So.... I rendered a picture of the hair, it works great and looks good too, although it's obvious that this would be the "natural" shader cause it doesn't look as rough in texture as the wig in the photo does, so... I'll make a shader to make it look rougher like a wig later and render it and then post it here... But I do hope you like the "natural" look too :)
I could probably just disconect the trans map to get the even-edge wig look. Would that work or mess up the whole hair?
As you can see from this pic., the hair has a lot of volume to it.
Yeah I can see it... It's just that this hair has litterally about 6 layers of "strands" going from mid ear to her scalp... which is a lot more than most other Poser hairs I've seen... I could try to make it look thicker in Zbrush or add 1 or 2 more layers of hair, but I'd have to see how well that works and renders in Poser, cause if I add too much the obj will be too big in file size, lol...
I'll keep you updated...
P.S: The "bangs" is the part above her eyes, lol...
Oh wow... I did add a few more layers and it's a lot thicker, but now it's 40.4Mb, lol...
I hope your pc can handle that, (mine can), if not than I can decimate it in Zbrush it's just I hate how decimating it turns the squares into triangles -_- lol... its up to you, I could potentially upload a low res and hi res as seperate freebies, but like I said it's up to you :)
No..NO...NO....don'tdecimate it!!! (LOL....I don't know what that means either.)
I've got an i7 and 12 gb of ram on Win7 64, and PPr02012, so it should be OK.
We were thinking of using it on this character, with a few modifications, or maybe a new character, I'm not sure-

Ok good, then I'll keep it the way it is... I'm gonna render the thicker model with the new transmap in a little bit, and I'll post it later today...
RANDOM QUESTION: In the gallery picture the hair looks really good, what hair model is that? It doesn't look photoshopped to me, but if it is then my mistake, but if it's a model what model is it? lol...
and its a really nice render btw ;)
That's Wild Hair or Wild Heart for Wild Hair, not sure which, but it's easily the best rendering hair I've come across. It's also very resource hungry especially with IDL and SSS passes included. Hampton Hair is pretty good too, particularly from the back... not that many people render from that direction LOL.
Wow that looks like the most versatile hairstyle I've ever seen if Wild Hair can do all that, lol...
And Hampton Hair does look good, but what I wish is that they'd make the V5 Elite Ponytail compatible with V4 (not the Genesis version) and make it work in Poser... I got the free version of Daz 4, but it keeps crashing so it's obviously not my fave program right now, lol...
Anyways, I'm setting up the scene to render a new preview image of the hair... for right now I'm calling it "Hollie Hair" cause that's the girl that was wearing it in the last render, lol... but that's not the official name, so what would you like me to name it? hehe
Lazy Hair obviously! LOL Or the character from Lazy Town is named Stephanie, so maybe Stephanie Hair.
I also would love to have the V5 ponytail to use in Poser, it looks really nice.
It's getting late here so I may not be back till the morning.
Thank you again for all your work, it's greatly appreciated.
It depends on the dimension sizes, render settings and how big of a scene it is... This one took about 4 hours and 30 minutes cause I wanted a big enough dimension size so that the details could be seen. The size for this one is 1600x1280.
This one was not rendered with "seperate processes" but it might help it render faster if you did check that for rendering this one... Hope it's not gonna be too much for your pc.
I'm excited about the pink one too, lol I want to compare it to the referense and it will be easier to do so once I have the pink hair and hair band together, lol...
I'll post the image sometime tonight or tomorrow :) Good day
I'm not sure why it took so long, it seems it's faster at the top but once it gets down to the face and the transparent strands at the bottom it slows down a bit...
And it does have shadows and visible in raytracing checked, the lighting is just pretty bright to show the detail in the hair, lol...
And yes :) I did a hairband, the problem, which is pretty apparent in the render is that the gems aren't reflecting or having enough shine, which frusterates me, lol... other than that I like the render, hehe... :)
I've found the transmapped area of a hair will always slow down renders compared to the other bits.
Could be the material properties of the gems (shader), but I'm sure you've checked that already. Maybe the lighting? Is it IDL?
For IDL lighting I always need a specular light as well to get things to shine.
No I hasn't been able to update to any newer versions of Poser yet (I hope to get Poser 2012 sometime soon) but for right now I own Poser 7, lol... I'm way behind, but it works good for me and I've been waiting for them to come out with the next best Poser before I give up P7 cause I think P7 is one of the best versions... so no IDL yet, lol...
It does have IBL tho, lol on one light I think the rest are just normal point lights, 2 specular lights, 1 shadow light, 1 IBL light and 1 diffuse light (give or take one, lol I can't remember the exact settings right now but this sounds pretty close)...
As far as the gems go I might have to re-model them, even though I turned "Smooth Polygons" off for the hairband it still seems to be a lot smoother than when I modeled it so it could be the shape of the gems, I don't know tho...
Yeh, I has P7 before 2012 and it was very, very stable.
P2012 SSS adds more felexibility again with skins and seems to render quicker by plugging some memory holes of previous versions.
I haven't applied any service pack as I've heard bad stories from others, but very rarely does it balk, and even more rarely crash, but it has a few times, usually when I try to do something outrageous, like 7 figures in a scene all with SSS and IDL and huge maps.
BTW, that's a lot of lights in your scene LOL. Mostly these days I just use one.
1 doesn't usually light my scene up well... I have used maybe 1 diffuse, with 1 specular off to the side or as a "rim" light and a shadow light, but that's usually for artistic renders where I'm not worried about extreme details...
but for promos or showing off stuff I made I use quite a few lights with different settings to bring out the best quality lol...
I like doing big renders, like usually from 1600x2000 all the way up to 3400x4000 lol, some smaller if it's just a quick render but I normally go for a walk or hang out with friends or sleep while it's rendering lol... XD
If render time is a problem I can size the texture, bump, spec and trans maps down a bit and also try a render with less lights to see if it will render faster with less extreme lights and smaller resolutions, lol.
