You have this backwards. It's harmless and does nothing, but will ruin reflective surfaces.
Since so few people can remember why this matters, I tell people to just always turn it off and stop trying to tell others when to turn it on. Never turn it on.
But - telling others to turn it off when they are not using reflection is also a waste of effort.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
