Do Poser renders really look better than DAZStudio ones?  Mats aside.  Getting away from the default lighting and render settings in DS goes along way to better renders, but sadly will not fix improperly coded mat files.

I am thinking about dropping Poser entirely since DAZ came out with DS 4 Pro.  Well not entirely, it will still hold the runtime that I store stuff in to use in DS 4 Pro.

The Reality plug in is also good for increasing the quality of your renders in DS.
