I vaguely recall that there is a limit on how far the render engine makes calculation. It has to cut off somewhere (otherwise it would have to evaluate the entire universe for every ray of light) to keep a reasonable render performance. I thought it would be for IDL, but it may be for other objects as well
Scaling the camera is a neat trick, I did not know it changed the viewport
