If you mean alternate_diffuse and alternate_specular, these channels simply accept whatever you plug into them. So, if you have a Diffuse() node - with a colour map plugged in the first channel and the second channel set to .8 - plugged into the alternate_diffuse channel, that's all the renderer will see.
Diffuse_Color and Diffuse_Value all have a diffuse node embedded in them for each light in the scene: these channels do a bunch of fancy maths with all this. Nice, but you lose precise control over your material. For instance, if you wanted to do CoE with Diffuse and Specular using the Diffuse_Color and Diffuse_Value channels at the top of the PoserSurface() node, you would find yourself at a bit of an impasse.
