For this purpose Wings would be the best. You do not need software with advanced options.
Wings is free, is small (I do not remember but about 10-20MB) and what is most important Wings is very easy.
BTW - Sam I think that you can model something in Poser. I never tried, but I think that you can weld one sided square. It would be difficult and useless but I think possible.
