Stewer told me about that possiblity, but I don't recall talking about how hard it would be. Seems plausible.
In fact, because refraction blocks all light, I'd like to see a new parameter not just define transparency as a color, but a separate one for light blocking versus seeing through. Right now, both are tied to the transparency value, and when I want to use refraction, I cannot get light to pass through. I'm not looking for caustics - I just want to make a drinking glass where I can use refraction to see through it, but use transparency to allow light through to reach the table or whatever is under/behind the glass.
I'd also like the IOR of a surface to be inverted when a ray goes from back to front - and it should deal with total internal reflection.
Because of these two problems, I have trouble making glass look completely as it should and also trouble making it cause a reasonable light/shadow pattern on what is around it.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
