In 2002, somewhere between V2 and V3 DAZ decided to leave the P4Woman base and to go their own route due to a licencing debate with Meta Creations in the process of issuing Poser5, which led them to targeting the games creation market, to create their own Studio product and to the unimesh approach. (Oh no, that subject again). That's ten ago now (!!), long before SmithMicro entered the Poser stage. I'll publish the full overview soon on my website.

If I recall correctly, V3 was based on the bodyscan of a real photomodel (*), and V4 was a mesh improvement of that (wikipedia: using modo). It took Daz about three years to do that, about the time modo needed to come to a serious existence (wikipedia again).
