Yeah.. that is one of the things I had to learn to make a habit.. making sure I had the correct pen tool selected. Another thing you will likely have to get used to is, when you "bend" a line, adjusting the "length" of the adjustment, (what I call "tweakers"... the two lines that appear when you are bending),  this adjusts the "severity" of the bend.
