Ted and I have very nice wood textures on our furniture sets. You can see them in my store.
Tom
I'd searched around a lot for decent wood for Poser:
Now... I'd certainly recommend going with getting and using the wood within the Dreamland Models/Bagginsbill sets (this is all provided within the sets as reusable material files).
The woods in these sets are based on seamless tiled image textures in fact, but with BB's magic worked on top of those. They are the best looking wood you'll get I reckon... and they also render pretty fast in my experience.
For Metal, I'd be saying get Snarlygribbly's free EZMetals pack. Yes its procedural... although there is an option to use textures I think... but, as Miss Nancy says, this is not a render speed issue in itself... I guess if the procedurals are well put together.
Certainly in my experience EZMetals materials render pretty fast.
What slows down renders will not surely be that a material is procedural... but more likey rather, that the better, more realistic materials utilise real ray-traced reflections (and probably fresnel based / blurred reflections at that)?
Cheers

I'd echo the recommendation for procedural materials for clean metals (rusty and distressed metals are a different matter). I find that procedurals usually render faster than mapped materials, and certainly take up less memory.I make a lot of use of templargfx's car materials (see link for free pack).
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm embarrassed to say that I took a closer look at what I "thought" were just mapped materials I bought and it turns out they're all procedurals, but some of them have maps. lol. And, as some of you pointed out the render speed is just fine. I don't know how I got the idea in to my head that Poser procedurals were slow to render. Some of them are, but most seem to be fine.
I am an expert at procedural textures and WoodWorkshop is clever but, IMO, unfinished. The results are like cartoon shaders.

I loaded it into my wood shader (which applies stain and a wax finish) and this is the result.

Too bad though everybody hangs to these 'seamless testures'. Repetition is unavoidable and is noticed right away.
Would appreciate the real 3D stuff: An infinite 3D procedural definition from which the object would be 'cut' , so for wood moving into cross grain texture, etc.
I remember good old PovRay did that.
Would welcome an application that would render the sections of a 3-D object with a 3Dwood texture into UV space, so giving 'real' pieces of wood you can move around. Poser is not very good at rotating and moving texture functions.
I have numerous ways to do 100% procedural infinite non-repeating wood grain, but none of them look as rich as the wood textures. I find it easier to just photograph some wood. I have an ever-growing collection.
Check this render out - the wood texture is not repeated. Looks great to me.
I have a couple hundred shaders like this in the store.

I'll show you the shaders.
Here's the first group that comes with the Armoire. The shiny new ones.

Had a chance to play with some of your shaders, bb. I'm completely dazzled. They're wonderful. Wish I had known sooner. Every Poserite should buy at least one of your furniture pieces just for the shaders, even if they don't need the furniture. And plus it's kinda fun to turn Vicky into a candidate for Dutch elm disease.
Love that marble top! Looking forward to seeing the full package of shaders. I was thinking to get one of the Dreamland furniture packs tonight, but I'm not sure which one has the largest selection of shaders included. I can use any of the furniture peices, they are all very nice, I just would like to get the best bang for my buck.

Are there any vendors who sell seamless wood, metal and/or other inorganic textures already in Poser material format? No procedurals or raw image files please. I'm looking for quick scene set up and fast renders. I've found a lot of good seamless clothing type textures already in Poser format, but haven't been able to find any woods or metals so far. Been looking for an hour or two. I'm running P12 if it matters. Thanks for any help.
