Subject: Mapping

Hi all,

I have some trouble with the material mapping in Vue.
When I use a mapped picture on an exported OBJ object from Sketchup I must set the mapping to 'flat' or 'faces' to get the material correct. But the problem is that I cannot set the same  'flat' or 'faces' setting to a 'picture' bump map. The bump map is too small..

Anyone any idea what I can do to prevent this? A work around maybe? Or some tips?

Thanks!

In the function editor for the material, are you using a Projected Texture Map that you then point to your Bump node?  And what is the Mapping position mode you are using for the Projected Texture Map (at the bottom of the window).

You can have your color texture map point at both the Color and Bump nodes.  Then you know they'll line up no matter what Mapping and Mapping Position you use.

Did he say use the color texture map for bump?  It's a science experiment.

It's looks like my current version (5 Infinite) not have those settings (Projected Texture Map). I can choose the mapping type which I'm forced to set to Faces or Flat.
The bump map section does not have that option.. So I think that the bump map is not set to Faces or Flat and causes this problem.

Keep an eye out for something that says Object - Parametric or Object -Standard.  They need to be the same if your textures are trying to be mapped the same way.

It's been 100 years since I used Vue Infinite 5, so I don't even remember if there was a function editor in that version.  I never started using the FE completely until Vue Infinite 7.

Yeah, 5 Infinite has a FE, and a pretty extensive one for that time.

I use Object Parameteric for this, and I understand what that means.

If I choose the mapping in de editor at the top, the bump maps tab doesn't have any separate mapping option. So this is 1 option to all the settings.

The problem stays, only with the OBJ files. Not with a cube made in Vue itself.
First I thought the problem only occurs when the object is exported using triangulated faces.. But from what I understand Vue likes triangulated faces.

OBJ is a keyword.  OBJ importing in Vue assumes that the model is UV mapped so that color, bump, alpha, etc texture maps fall into place.

Do you have a better program than SketchUp that can verify if the model is UV mapped properly if at all, and do any adjustments there and then export from that program into Vue?

I use UVMapper Pro for obj mapping, makes heck of a difference as some apps toally mess up mapping! :)

Carrara is an excellent OBJ exporter for me.  I use it to add creases to my models that hold up in other apps that I export to.  I UV map in 3D-Coat.
