I also suggest Wings. It has lots of features and if you get the plugin suite for it, there's tons of extra options if you want them.
As a standalone app for modelling, it's absolute simplicity to use. I made my first Dalek after playing around with Wings for around a month. I think I followed one simple tutorial at first, then tried every tool and function to see what they'd do.
Best of all, it's free.

I have not had a lot of luck so far. None of the three apps is really free but just offer a limited free trial period, and that's fair enough if the app is good.
The downloaded wings contained malware, which Kasperski caught, so I deleted it.
imagine3d.org/modules/wfdownloads; URL not found; incomprehensible main site; says it allows filetypes pdf, avi, lha, lzh, zip but no mention of obj. files.
hexagon -- I installed this; demo only; hopeless readme; I simply can't figure how to import or open OBJ files, my main purpose. Otherwise it looks fairly straightforward.
I'll look into Carrara, tough I know it does far more than I need, andf into the list of 25 dr. geep suggested (thanks for that)..

Otherwise it looks fairly straightforward. It's the full version including serial number from the DAZ website (as the above link ). As for .obj import, it's File->Import and then clicking the dropdown arrow by the filetypes box on the 'open' window and selecting .obj as the file type.
There many free tutorials for Hexagon at http://www.geekatplay.com/hexagontutorials/begining.php too.
If you got Wings from the proper download sites and Kaspersky says it contains malware, Kaspersky is giving a false positive.

Sorry dude. I was being helpful. I always try to be. Maybe I'm not the sharpest tool in the drawer but I'm no fool. Some ppl on the otherhand....
Did you check the link I gave you? Is that where you downloaded Wings from? Cause if you didn't that may be why Kapersky is giving you a virus warning. Of ALLLLL the ppl on this site and no one's ever gotten a virus warning from Wings and you call ME a fool...hahahaha.
Whatever. Signing off for today. Some people make my head hurt.

not the easiest interface though, but once you get going you dispose of the interface anyway and animate 2 handed: one on the keyboard on on the mouse. fast and sweet. hell of a support group, tons of scripts. you can make games and stuff with it too but i've never gone that way. i hope to someday...
go that way really fast.

Quote - If you are looking a tool for modelling, wings3d is without a doubt your best option.
Agreed. It's the single most indispensible tool I use. You can model from scratch. You can set your import/output scale to work with Poser. It doesn't change vertex order on import/export. UV tools are great once you get the hang of them. I don't know what I'd be using if Wings had not been developed. I won't say it's the best modeler, but it may be the best modeler to use with Poser.

I need a low end 3D program of great simplicity, similar to Ray Dream 5 which I previously used, but compatible with Windows 7, with only basic modelling function, no bells or whistles. Any suggestions?
